Over the centuries, the Peranakans have evolved a unique culture that maintains many Chinese traditions, such as celebrating the Lunar New Year and the Lantern Festival, while adopting the customs of the land they settled in, as well as those of their successive colonial rulers. There are traces of Portuguese, Dutch, British, Malay and Indonesian influences in Baba culture.

At the dinner table...
Calling your elders to eat is a luxury that today we enjoy but perhaps do not even practice! Who ate first? Was it the man of the house or the Matriarch? What do we use fingers or fine china? What dishes were served and for what purpose?

**Straits Chinese Porcelain:**
Wealthy Peranakans acquired porcelain wares that were made in Jingdezhen in China's Jiangxi province. In the third quarter of the 19th century, the Peranakan communities of the Straits Settlements (Penang, Malacca and Singapore) began to demand wares in distinct, bright colours, influenced by the hues of Qing dynasty imperial wares.
