Peranakan Festival

The first Peranakan festival was first organized by The Peranakan Association (The PA) in 2005.The objective of this festival is to further the aims of the association in promoting and preserving the Peranakan culture, through more accessible public events. Four years on, we are embarking on a mammoth scale showcase of Peranakan culture and heritage. 


The PA was formed in 1900 and celebrates its 109th anniversary this year. The PA will also be the host of the Baba Convention to be held in Singapore from the 27th Nov - 6th Dec 2009. We will play host to some 150 delegates from around the region.


The Peranakan Festival will be held from 27th Nov to 6th Dec 2009 with a raft of exciting events.

Baba Convention – Living Baba Legacies

Hotel Royal @ Queens, 27 – 29 Nov

Meet and learn from cultural experts as they present and discuss various Peranakan issues spanning its rich heritage through to present-day matters. Delegates will also have ample opportunities to socialize and strengthen the bonds between Peranakan communities from all over Asia and Australia.

The Biggest and Best Babazaar

SMU Concourse, 11am-6pm, 28 – 29 Nov

Official Opening: 12 noon, 28 Nov

Our flagship event comprises a food & craft fair with over 100 stalls. Let Nyonya favourites, including genuine home-made delights whet your appetite and view intricate craft and decorative items. Be entertained with non-stop ‘live’ music and comedy skits featuring fresh talent and new work. Tap along to the melodious, forgotten strains of keronchong, angklung and gamelan bands.

Come early to redeem the special $1 food offers at the back of the Festival brochure.  Admission is free.

 

Mouthwatering Cuisine Demonstrations

SMU, School of Economics & School of Social Sciences Building, Level 1

11am-6pm, 28 - 29 Nov

Chef Philip Chia and guest chefs hold court with ‘live’ cooking demonstrations of various signature Nyonya dishes. Savour forgotten cuisine from the Baba, Chetti Melaka and Eurasian communities and compare the subtle differences between the same classic dishes when prepared by the different communities.

Baba Art - an exhibition

Featuring Peranakan-themed artworks by young and emerging as well as established artists specially curated for the Festival.

 

Joo Chiat: Our Peranakan Heritage – a photography competition / exhibition

SMU Concourse, 28 Nov – 6 Dec

Organised by the Joo Chiat CC Youth Club, 30 photographs with a Peranakan theme will be selected by a panel of judges and exhibited at SMU. The top five entries stand to win cash prizes totalling $1,000.

 

  Baba Bling by The Peranakan Museum

The Peranakan Museum, ongoing till 13 Dec

This exhibition features exquisite jewellery from the private collections of many Peranakan families. The Museum will host an open house on 5 & 6 Dec.

Admission at $6 per person. Concessions available for full-time students and National Servicemen.

 

The Quiet Collector –  a forum
The National Library, Victoria Street, 6:30 - 9:00pm, 2 Dec

There are facets to collecting that are seldom explored. Richard Wee's exquisite collection of beaded slippers entice with their colour and beauty. Tan Gek Suan has a passion for cooking. Aileen Lau recorded interviews in Baba Malay as a means of preserving the language. GT Lye and Sunny Tan's fathers both recorded pantuns, capturing the literary wit of a time gone by. Join us at the National Library for an insightful evening with these collections and the personalities behind them.

NUS Museum Talk – Not Just My Grandmother’s Kebayas

NUS Museum, 6 – 7:30pm, 3 Dec

Penang-born Christine Khor, Director of NUS Centre For the Arts, will showcase a selection from her 100-strong kebaya collection to illustrate the evolution of the Nyonya wardrobe. Learn what colours and embroidered motifs were used for various occasions, and about the kebaya’s accompanying accessories.

Peranakan Trails - heritage tours

8:30am – 2pm, daily, 27 Nov – 6 Dec

Organised with the support of the Singapore Tourism Board, these special tours are conducted in both English and Mandarin. Learn about significant buildings within Singapore’s CBD and visit Peranakan enclaves both famous and little-known. View exquisite examples of Straits Chinese architecture and discover how factors including climate, lifestyle practices and even legislation affected the design and layout of the traditional Peranakan home. Dine on authentic Nyonya cuisine at Kim Choo’s, the famous Peranakan eatery in the heart of Katong, home to many Peranakan families.

Baba House Tours

Baba House, 157 Neil Road, 5 Dec

Join us for a guided tour of an authentic early 20th century Straits Chinese family home. Baba House underwent a meticulous one-and-a-half-year restoration with extensive archaeological examination of the site. There is a maximum of 13 persons per tour.

The Peranakan Festival Closing Ceremony

The Peranakan Festival will close on 6 Dec with a food, craft and entertainment fair at Joo Chiat Community Club as part of Peranakan Culture @ Joo Chiat. All are welcome.
