The sheer diversity of sarong designs available on the market today suggests a colourful history behind the versatile garment. The motifs, colours and dye techniques are often unique to the regions they are made in. From being used as daily wear, as baby-carriers, and even makeshift changing areas, the sarong was an important utilitarian item in a nyonya’s wardrobe. Batik collector and business owner Stefanie Wibowo will speak about her collection of antique batik, as well as demonstrate the different ways to ikat (tie) the sarong.
