Dear Nyonyas and Babas
Our very unique Peranakan food has always been what sets us apart from Southeast Asia’s Chinese, Indian, Malay and Eurasian communities.
Yet our extraordinary food culture is born of a rich mix of Chinese-Malay-Indian food heritage (even European – Portuguese, Dutch and English). Somehow, this magical fusion of colours, flavours, tastes, aromas and textures has always whetted our appetite.
We are thrilled to announce that our last hard copy edition of THE PERANAKAN magazine (Issue 2/22) will celebrate, but of course, Peranakan food in all its glory! The magazine is in the mail to you. We know you will enjoy it.
I would like to thank Editor Nyonya Linda Chee and the Editorial Committee for a magnificent job and for their commitment to ensuring our culture is well documented all these years. A very special thanks to Linda for helming the magazine from 2004 to 2016 and again from 2021 to present, our longest-serving editor, and for her leadership in developing it into a precious compendium of our memories both old and new.
Our thanks also to Creative Adviser Baba John Lee and Designer Nyonya Joanne Low for the consistently beautiful design of the hard copy magazine, and illustrators Eileen Chan and Anastasia Zenia.
The current editorial committee includes Emeric Lau, Elisabeth Chan, Colin Chee, Benedict Khoo, Ngiam May Ling, Bryan Tan, Joanne Tan De-Zilva, Ronney Tan, Billy Tay and Anastasia Zenia. The General Committee and I thank them for their commitment to carry on documenting our culture in the exciting years ahead as it evolves through re-imagination and reinvention.
We also thank the people who have contributed articles and hope that they will continue to write for us. Thanks too, to our sponsors, our advertisers and others who have made this publication possible. Not forgetting all our past editors, especially Baba Peter Lee who was editor from 1995 to 2008.
A technical team has already been formed to ensure the smooth transition of THE PERANAKAN magazine from a hard copy magazine to a digital news magazine in 2023. We look forward to turning a new page as we look to new technologies in publication and cultural documentation to serve us better.
Kamsiah Manyak Manyak one and all!
Warm wishes,
Nyonya Genevieve Peggy Jeffs
