Lead by Nonya Cynthia Wee-hoefer
Lead by Nonya Cynthia Wee-hoefer
Join our mixed group of “actors” in a public play-reading session in the historic NUS Baba House. Not any play but one in the Baba Malay patois of the Peranakan Chinese.
Acknowledging that the language of the Babas and Nyonyas is fast diminishing, we strive to revive our peculiar native tongue that is bazaar Malay mingled with Chinese dialects and English. What better way than through the written words or script of a play of everyday life in a Peranakan household?
If you read and speak Baba Malay and keen to act out in a circle of 12 players, please email events@peranakan.org.sg. Available on first-come first-served basis.
About the play “Ayer Di-Tetak Tak leh Putus” (Blood Is Thicker Than Water) by Nyonya Irene Ong with story by Encik GT Lye.
The play is set in the post war years of the 1950s and 60s and revolves around the lives of three sisters and their families. At times touching with tenderness and riled with moments when you appreciate the acid tongue of the Peranakan ladies. First performed onstage in June 2019 by The Peranakan Siblings, we take up the challenge of the written words in our coming session.
Audience are welcomed too! As seats are limited, do register with events@peranakan.org.sg as well.
