In this month’s video, I am joined by Baba Philip Yeo of the General Committee and the team from the National Heritage Board (NHB) comprising Melissa Tan, Director, Heritage Policy & Research, Mingmin Cao, Assistant Manager, Heritage Policy & Research and Sathashivam Logaraj, Assistant Manager, Heritage Policy & Research.

In March 2023, Singapore, together with Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand, submitted a multinational nomination to inscribe the kebaya to the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

In this video, the NHB team shares the rationale for the nomination, the detailed nomination process and thanks The Peranakan Association Singapore (TPAS) and members of the community for their support in the process.

To find out more about the multinational nomination of the kebaya, watch the official 10-minute Multinational Nomination of Kebaya video and Video of Consent here: https://www.nhb.gov.sg/what-we-do/our-work/sector-development/unesco/kebaya

While we await the nomination results which are expected to be released in 2024, NHB has planned a series of programmes, the major one being the travelling exhibition “Love, Kebaya” to highlight the significance of the kebaya as a form of shared cultural heritage across Southeast Asia. After the first exhibition at the National Museum of Singapore, this travelling exhibition is now at the Visitor Services Centre at Gardens by the Bay till 14 May 2023. From 16 – 24 May 2023, it will travel to the Festive Market at Our Tampines Hub.

More information about the exhibition can be found here: https://www.gardensbythebay.com.sg/en/things-to-do/calendar-of-events/love-kebaya.html

Baba Philip Yeo is pleased to announce our first post-pandemic Malam Jolly dinner will be held on 14 July 2023 (Friday) at Summer Garden at SAFRA Mount Faber. Baba Philip is excited about the Friday Nite Fever theme and encourages members to purchase a ticket and dress up to the theme for a night of party. Malam Jolly is TPAS’ annual dinner for members to get together, so we have kept the ticket price affordable for members at $88/pax. As there are limited tables, do book your tickets early at www.tinyurl.com/MalamJolly2023.

We hope you enjoy watching our video clips as much as we enjoy putting them together.

Warm wishes,

Nyonya Genevieve Peggy Jeffs
