Dear Nyonyas and Babas,
In this month’s video, I am joined by Baba Gilbert Cheah, a fifth-generation Peranakan, and a descendent of Chew Boon Lay, his great grandfather.
Baba Gilbert shares interesting nuggets of his family history from the book, “Chew Boon Lay: A Family Traces its History” which was put together by various members of his family including himself, and how Boon Lay town came to be named after Chew Boon Lay. Gilbert will be sharing more about his family history at the upcoming Baba Nyonya Literary Festival on 27 and 28 July 2024 which will be held at the Pod in the National Library Building on Victoria Street.
Regular viewers may notice that the style of our Chakap Chakap video has changed slightly this month. Jaems Chua, the founder of https://www.instagram.com/thefashionandbeyond, had kindly volunteered his manpower and production resources to produce this video. Going forward, Jaems and our long-time volunteers Carlos Monforte and Francesca Soh, will make up our video production team. We wish to take this opportunity to thank them for their tireless devotion to TPAS and for always volunteering with a happy and willing heart.
We hope you enjoy watching our video clips as much as we enjoy putting them together.
Warm wishes,
Nyonya Genevieve Peggy Jeffs
