In this video, The Peranakan Association Singapore President, Nyonya Genevieve Peggy Jeffs, speaks with three sisters—Nyonya Ika Hendromartono, Nyonya Melia Hendromartono, and Nyonya Inge Hendromartono—at the Peranakan Museum, where the current exhibition “Batik Nyonyas: Three Generations of Art and Entrepreneurship” is being held.

The exhibition highlights the lives, works, and entrepreneurial spirit of three remarkable Peranakan women from Pekalongan, Indonesia—Nyonya Oeij Soen King, Nyonya Oeij Kok Sing, and Jane Hendromartono—since the late 19th century. Through spectacular textiles and artifacts, the exhibition showcases how these women navigated significant political, cultural, and economic shifts to build a successful business while producing exceptional art.

In the interview, the three sisters, daughters of Jane Hendromartono, share memories of growing up in the family’s batik workshop, which also served as their home. Nyonya Inge, speaking on behalf of her sisters, reflects on their experiences and conveys the Hendromartono family’s hope that more people will come to appreciate both batik and Peranakan culture.

We hope you enjoy watching these video clips as much as we enjoyed creating them!
