Dear Nyonyas and Babas,

This is not our usual monthly Chakap Chakap—this is a special edition featuring our Baba and Nyonya consultants for Mediacorp’s sequel, Emerald Hill – The Little Nyonya Story. Joining me are Nyonya Gwen Ong, Baba Raymond Wong, Nyonya Lilian Chua, and Nyonya Ngiam May Ling.

We delved into the crucial roles our consultants played behind the scenes to bring this 30-episode drama to life. Nyonya Gwen shared insights into Peranakan death rituals, covering both what is portrayed on screen and the unseen efforts to ensure the well-being of the cast and crew. Baba Raymond spoke about the inspirations behind some of the stunning kebaya designs featured in the show. Nyonya Lilian recounted her experience guiding the actresses on the art of eating, walking, carrying themselves, and even playing the cherki card game—she praised their professionalism and quick learning. Nyonya May Ling discussed the collaborative efforts between Mediacorp and TPAS, ensuring the consultants’ scope of work aligned seamlessly with the production’s needs.

A special thank you also goes to Baba Lee Yuen Thien, who is not in this video, for his invaluable advice and contributions.
